Empowering Individuals with Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities (IDD) through Therapeutic Horsemanship

Our Equine-Assisted Therapy (EAT) program is designed to promote physical, emotional, and social well-being through structured interactions with horses. As an Equine-Assisted Therapist, you will play a vital role in facilitating therapeutic riding and equine-assisted activities that build confidence, develop motor skills, improve communication, and foster emotional growth.
This position requires expertise in equine-assisted interventions, knowledge of ODP regulations, and a commitment to supporting individuals in achieving greater independence and quality of life.
Key Responsibilities
Individual Assessment & Therapy Planning
- Conduct comprehensive assessments to evaluate an individual’s physical, cognitive, emotional, and sensory processing abilities and determine suitability for equine-assisted therapy.
- Develop individualized therapy plans based on assessment findings, the individual’s goals, and collaboration with interdisciplinary team members.
- Ensure therapy plans align with each individual’s ISP (Individual Support Plan) and follow ODP guidelines for waiver-funded services.
- Regularly monitor progress, track therapy outcomes, and modify treatment plans to ensure continued growth and development.
Therapeutic Interventions & Equine-Assisted Activities
- Facilitate equine-assisted therapy sessions that focus on motor skill development, balance, coordination, social engagement, and emotional regulation.
- Implement therapeutic riding techniques, groundwork exercises, and unmounted activities to meet each individual’s functional and therapeutic needs.
- Use evidence-based equine-assisted therapy strategies, including sensory integration, behavioral support, and communication enhancement.
- Adapt therapy activities to accommodate diverse abilities, ensuring accessibility, inclusion, and safety for all individuals.
Safety, Risk Management & Equine Care
- Ensure safe interactions between individuals and horses, including proper mounting, dismounting, and adaptive equipment usage.
- Maintain rigorous safety protocols aligned with PATH Intl., EAGALA, and other ODP-approved certification standards.
- Oversee the health, training, and well-being of therapy horses, ensuring they remain calm, responsive, and suitable for therapeutic interventions.
- Conduct routine facility safety checks, ensuring that all equipment, tack, and environmental factors meet best practices for therapy and accessibility.
Collaboration & Communication
- Work closely with occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech-language pathologists, behavioral specialists, and direct support professionals (DSPs) to ensure holistic, interdisciplinary care.
- Provide training and guidance to caregivers and support staff on how to reinforce therapy goals outside of sessions.
- Collaborate with families, caregivers, and community providers to develop strategies that integrate equine-assisted activities into everyday life.
- Advocate for increased accessibility and inclusion of equine-assisted therapy programs within waiver services and community-based settings.
Documentation, Compliance & Quality Assurance
- Maintain accurate, detailed records of therapy sessions, progress notes, incident reports, and outcome measurements in accordance with ODP and Medicaid documentation standards.
- Participate in program evaluations, quality improvement initiatives, and evidence-based research to enhance service delivery.
- Ensure all therapy interventions comply with HIPAA, ODP, and other regulatory requirements.
Professional Development & Continuing Education
- Stay current with advancements in equine-assisted therapy, sensory-based interventions, and trauma-informed care.
- Maintain certifications in Equine-Assisted Therapy and related therapeutic modalities, as required by ODP-approved organizations.
- Engage in continuing education, conferences, and hands-on workshops to expand clinical expertise.
Qualifications & Requirements
Education & Certification
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Psychology, Counseling, Special Education, Social Work, or a related field.
- Certification in Equine-Assisted Therapy from one of the following:
- Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH Intl.)
- Equine-Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA)
- American Hippotherapy Certification Board
- Council for Education and Certification in Therapeutic Horsemanship
- Other ODP-approved certification board
- CPR/First Aid Certification preferred.
Experience & Skills
- Experience working with individuals with IDD, autism, neurological conditions, or behavioral health needs.
- Strong knowledge of equine behavior, horse care, and handling techniques.
- Ability to modify and adapt equine activities to accommodate individual sensory, motor, and emotional needs.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and team collaboration skills.
- Ability to create a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for individuals, caregivers, and staff.
Additional Requirements
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation (travel to therapy sites may be required).
- Ability to work in an outdoor environment and handle physical demands of equine therapy activities.
