As a Companion Services Provider, you will offer supervision, emotional support, and assistance with incidental activities of daily living (ADLs) to individuals aged 18 and older who reside in private homes. Your role aligns with Pennsylvania’s Office of Developmental Programs (ODP) regulations, ensuring that individuals receive high-quality, person-centered services that uphold their health, safety, and well-being.
Key Responsibilities
Supervision & Assistance
- Provide direct supervision and assistance to individuals in their home and community settings to ensure their health, safety, and welfare.
- Offer support with meal preparation, medication reminders, personal hygiene tasks, and household routines, as outlined in the individual’s Individual Support Plan (ISP).
- Encourage independence and self-care skills, assisting only as needed to promote autonomy.
Incidental Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)
- Assist with light housekeeping, laundry, and grocery shopping to maintain a safe and comfortable living environment.
- Support individuals in managing daily tasks and responsibilities, fostering confidence and self-sufficiency.
Companionship & Social Engagement
- Engage in meaningful conversations, activities, and shared interests to provide companionship and emotional support.
- Encourage and facilitate participation in social and recreational activities, hobbies, and community events to enhance quality of life and community inclusion.
- Support individuals in developing and maintaining relationships with friends, family, and community members.
Safety & Emergency Preparedness
- Monitor the home and community environment to identify and address potential safety risks.
- Follow established safety protocols and emergency response procedures, including fire safety, first aid, and crisis intervention if needed.
- Ensure individuals are aware of and understand basic emergency procedures, assisting with drills and planning when necessary.
Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of services provided, including daily activities, progress notes, and observations.
- Report any significant changes in behavior, safety concerns, or incidents to the appropriate supervisor or designated contact in accordance with ODP reporting requirements.
- Ensure compliance with confidentiality policies and HIPAA regulations while handling individual records and personal information.
Qualifications & Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Previous experience in a caregiving, companion, or direct support role preferred.
- Knowledge of person-centered support, positive behavioral approaches, and community integration strategies.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport and establish trust with individuals and their families.
- Compassionate, patient, and dependable demeanor, with a genuine desire to enhance the lives of individuals with disabilities.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a support team.
- Must complete ODP-mandated trainings, including Mandated Reporter Training, First Aid/CPR, and Medication Administration (if applicable).
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record may be required for positions involving transportation of individuals.
- Must pass background checks and comply with all ODP and Allegheny Alliance regulatory requirements.
