Providing Person-Centered Behavioral Supports for Individuals with Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities (IDD)
At Allegheny Alliance, we are dedicated to providing high-quality, individualized behavioral support services that empower individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and co-occurring behavioral or mental health challenges. As a Behavioral Support Specialist, you will play a critical role in implementing evidence-based behavior support strategies that promote skill development, independence, and positive life outcomes in alignment with ODP regulations and the Pennsylvania waiver system.
This position requires expertise in behavior analysis, positive behavior support, and crisis intervention, along with a commitment to trauma-informed, person-centered, and least restrictive behavioral support approaches.
Key Responsibilities
Behavior Assessment & Functional Analysis
- Conduct comprehensive Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs) to analyze:
- Behavior patterns, antecedents, and consequences that contribute to challenging behaviors.
- Environmental factors, communication barriers, and social interactions that influence behavior.
- Collaborate with individuals, families, and interdisciplinary team members to identify root causes of behaviors and develop function-based intervention strategies.
- Ensure behavioral assessments and interventions comply with ODP requirements for behavioral support services under the Person/Family Directed Support (P/FDS) and Consolidated Waivers.
Behavior Intervention Planning (BIP)
- Develop individualized, strength-based Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) that:
- Incorporate evidence-based interventions such as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Positive Behavior Support (PBS), and Trauma-Informed Care approaches.
- Align with the individual’s goals, preferences, and ISP (Individual Support Plan).
- Focus on teaching adaptive skills and functional communication to replace challenging behaviors.
- Implement preventative, proactive, and least restrictive strategies to support self-regulation, social engagement, and emotional well-being.
Behavioral Support, Training & Coaching
- Provide direct coaching, modeling, and consultation to:
- Individuals, families, caregivers, and direct support professionals (DSPs) on behavior management strategies.
- Staff on reinforcement techniques, de-escalation methods, and effective communication strategies.
- Teach self-regulation, coping skills, and social problem-solving to individuals, promoting greater independence in residential, vocational, and community settings.
- Train staff on crisis prevention and intervention strategies (e.g., Safety-Care, CPI Nonviolent Crisis Intervention®), ensuring adherence to ODP regulations regarding restrictive procedures.
Data Collection & Progress Monitoring
- Collect and analyze behavioral data using quantitative and qualitative tracking methods.
- Use ODP-approved behavior tracking tools to monitor intervention effectiveness and adjust strategies as needed.
- Regularly review and revise Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) based on data trends, team feedback, and observed progress.
- Ensure compliance with Medicaid waiver documentation requirements and ODP Behavioral Support Service Guidelines.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration & Teamwork
- Work closely with:
- Psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, direct support professionals (DSPs), and medical teams to ensure a holistic, person-centered approach.
- Families, guardians, and community partners to enhance continuity of care and generalization of skills across settings.
- ODP supports coordinators and waiver service providers to ensure services align with state guidelines and ISP objectives.
- Participate in ISP meetings, case conferences, and clinical team meetings to advocate for individualized behavioral needs and service enhancements.
Documentation, Compliance & Reporting
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in compliance with:
- ODP, Medicaid, and Allegheny Alliance reporting standards.
- HIPAA and confidentiality regulations.
- ODP waiver service documentation guidelines for Behavioral Support Services (BSS).
- Complete and submit:
- Behavioral assessments, progress notes, data analysis reports, incident reports, and required regulatory documentation.
- Monitor restrictive procedures, ensuring all interventions prioritize the least restrictive alternatives and comply with state-mandated review processes.
Professional Development & Best Practices
- Stay informed on current research and best practices in ABA, PBS, trauma-informed care, and disability rights advocacy.
- Maintain ODP-mandated continuing education requirements for behavioral support professionals.
- Engage in supervision, peer collaboration, and professional development opportunities to enhance service delivery.
Qualifications & Requirements
Education & Certification
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Behavior Analysis, Psychology, Special Education, Social Work, Counseling, or a related field.
- Preferred: Certification as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA), or ODP-approved equivalent credential.
- If not BCBA-certified, candidates must meet ODP qualifications for providing Behavioral Support Services (BSS) under PA waiver programs.
Experience & Skills
- Experience working with individuals with IDD, autism, mental health disorders, or challenging behaviors in educational, residential, vocational, or community-based settings.
- Strong knowledge of:
- Behavior analysis principles, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), and Positive Behavior Support (PBS) strategies.
- Crisis intervention techniques and trauma-informed care practices.
- Functional communication strategies and adaptive skill-building interventions.
- Excellent communication, problem-solving, and collaboration skills, with the ability to:
- Build rapport and establish trust with individuals, families, and staff.
- Adapt behavioral strategies to meet the unique needs of each individual.
Additional Requirements
- Valid PA driver’s license and reliable transportation (may require travel between service locations).
- Ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings or weekends as needed for individual and family training sessions.
- Clearances: PA Child Abuse Clearance, PA Criminal Background Check, and FBI Fingerprinting (in compliance with ODP regulations).
