    • Teach mobility techniques, including cane travel, sighted guide, electronic travel aids, and use of public transportation, to promote safe and independent travel in indoor and outdoor settings.
  4. Vision Rehabilitation and Assistive Technology:

    • Offer vision rehabilitation services to individuals with visual impairments, focusing on compensatory strategies, adaptive techniques, and use of low vision aids to maximize remaining vision and functional independence.
    • Recommend and prescribe appropriate assistive technology devices and tools, such as magnifiers, screen readers, and GPS navigation systems, to support individuals’ visual access and participation in daily activities.
  5. Individual Education and Support:

    • Educate individuals, families, and caregivers about the impact of visual impairment on daily functioning, safety considerations, and available resources for vision rehabilitation and community support services.
    • Provide training on strategies for maintaining safety, managing environmental challenges, and optimizing independence in activities of daily living for individuals with visual impairments.
  6. Documentation and Progress Monitoring:

    • Document assessment findings, intervention plans, progress notes, and discharge summaries accurately and in compliance with regulatory standards and practice guidelines.
    • Monitor individuals’ progress, evaluate outcomes, and adjust intervention strategies as needed based on ongoing assessment data and individual feedback.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Orientation and Mobility, Vision Rehabilitation Therapy, Rehabilitation Teaching, or related field.
  • Certification or licensure as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS), Vision Rehabilitation Therapist (VRT), or equivalent credential from a recognized professional organization (e.g., ACVREP).
  • Knowledge of vision anatomy and physiology, eye conditions and diseases, low vision assessment, and assistive technology for individuals with visual impairments.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and teaching skills, with the ability to establish rapport, build trust, and motivate individuals to actively participate in therapy.
  • Experience working with individuals with visual impairments or blindness in educational, rehabilitation, or community-based settings.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team, with flexibility to adapt therapy approaches to meet the unique needs and preferences of individuals.
