As an Equine-Assisted Therapist, you will utilize equine-assisted activities and therapies to promote physical, emotional, and psychological well-being for individuals of all ages. Your role will involve developing and implementing individualized therapy plans, assessing individual progress, and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to ensure holistic care and support.
Key Responsibilities:
Individual Assessment and Therapy Planning:
- Conduct comprehensive assessments to evaluate individuals’ physical, emotional, and cognitive needs and determine appropriateness for equine-assisted therapy.
- Develop individualized therapy plans based on assessment findings, individual goals, and input from interdisciplinary team members.
- Regularly monitor and document individual progress, adjusting treatment plans as needed to ensure continued growth and development.
Therapeutic Interventions and Activities:
- Facilitate equine-assisted therapy sessions, incorporating activities designed to promote physical strength, emotional resilience, and social skills.
- Ensure individual safety during interactions with horses, including proper handling, mounting, and dismounting procedures.
- Teach individuals horsemanship skills, grooming techniques, and riding exercises to foster confidence and independence.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Work closely with physical therapists, occupational therapists, behavioral specialists, and other healthcare providers to coordinate care and share insights into individual progress.
- Provide education and support to individuals’ families, offering guidance on reinforcing therapy goals outside of sessions.
- Communicate effectively with caregivers, trainers, and staff to ensure proper care and maintenance of therapy horses.
Documentation and Quality Assurance:
- Maintain detailed records of individual assessments, therapy sessions, and progress reports in compliance with regulatory standards.
- Participate in program evaluations, quality improvement initiatives, and evidence-based practices to enhance service delivery and individual outcomes.
Equine Care and Program Management:
- Oversee the health, safety, and training of therapy horses, ensuring they are well-maintained and suitable for therapeutic activities.
- Manage therapy equipment and facility safety, conducting regular inspections and maintenance checks.
Professional Development:
- Engage in continuing education and training to stay current with advancements in equine-assisted therapy techniques and best practices.
- Maintain relevant certifications and licensure, as required by state regulations and professional organizations.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Psychology, Counseling, or a related field.
- Certification in Equine-Assisted Therapy or Hippotherapy (e.g., PATH Intl., EAGALA, or similar accreditation).
- Experience working with individuals with physical, emotional, or developmental disabilities.
- Strong understanding of horse behavior, care, and handling.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills.
- Ability to create a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for individuals and staff.
