As a Behavioral Support Specialist, you will play a vital role in supporting individuals with behavioral challenges, developmental disabilities, or mental health disorders by implementing effective behavior management strategies and interventions. Your expertise in behavior analysis, positive behavior support, and crisis intervention will contribute to creating a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment that fosters individuals’ well-being and success.

  1. Behavior Assessment and Functional Analysis:
    • Conduct comprehensive assessments of individuals’ behavior patterns, triggers, antecedents, and consequences using functional behavior assessment (FBA) techniques and behavior analysis principles.
    • Collaborate with individuals, families, and interdisciplinary team members to identify underlying factors contributing to challenging behaviors and develop hypotheses about their function and purpose.
  2. Behavior Intervention Planning:
    • Develop individualized behavior intervention plans (BIPs) based on the results of behavior assessments, incorporating evidence-based strategies to address individuals’ specific needs and goals.
    • Implement proactive strategies, preventive measures, and skill-building interventions to teach individuals alternative, adaptive behaviors and reduce the occurrence of challenging behaviors.
  3. Behavior Support and Coaching:
    • Provide direct support, coaching, and modeling to individuals, caregivers, and support staff in implementing behavior management techniques, reinforcement strategies, and de-escalation procedures.
    • Offer guidance on effective communication strategies, conflict resolution techniques, and crisis prevention and intervention strategies to promote positive interactions and reduce the risk of behavioral crises.
  4. Data Collection and Progress Monitoring:
    • Collect and analyze data on individuals’ behavior patterns, intervention fidelity, and progress towards behavioral goals, using quantitative and qualitative methods to track outcomes and inform decision-making.
    • Regularly review and update behavior intervention plans based on ongoing assessment data, individual feedback, and observed changes in behavior.
  5. Collaboration and Teamwork:
    • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members, including psychologists, social workers, educators, therapists, and direct support professionals, to coordinate individual care and ensure consistency in behavior support strategies across settings.
    • Participate in team meetings, case conferences, and multidisciplinary assessments to share insights, provide input, and contribute to holistic treatment planning.
  6. Documentation and Reporting:
    • Document behavioral observations, intervention strategies, progress notes, and incident reports accurately and in compliance with regulatory standards and organizational policies.
    • Prepare written reports, behavior logs, and documentation summaries for individuals’ records, treatment reviews, and case conferences, ensuring confidentiality and adherence to privacy regulations.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Psychology, Behavior Analysis, Special Education, Social Work, or related field.
  • Certification as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA), or equivalent credential preferred.
  • Previous experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), mental health disorders, or challenging behaviors in educational, residential, or community-based settings.
  • Strong knowledge of behavior analysis principles, applied behavior analysis (ABA) techniques, and positive behavior support (PBS) strategies.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to build rapport, establish boundaries, and maintain professional relationships with individuals, families, and team members.
  • Proficiency in data collection, behavioral assessment tools, and behavior tracking software applications.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in dynamic, fast-paced environments, with flexibility to adapt to changing individual needs and organizational priorities.
